Chapter Sixteen

Max adjusted her sunglasses and gazed over the balcony railing at the park across the street. She swirled her glass lazily to clink the ice cubes, a tell that indicated her mind churned just as deliberately, and Peyton sensed this much-anticipated, restful afternoon at home was about to fade.

Labor Day Weekend had provided a sorely needed respite, despite the fact that Max showed up a half hour early. The day had been gloriously sunny and warm, the perfect setting for casting aside job tension, Miramar worries, and personal uncertainties. Worn to the bone, Peyton unwound in the good news from Max: Even after two weeks, Paranormal Pursuit’s crossover with the Casual Cook still trended big. Even after the other night, when Peyton and her team aired a standard week-two episode.

Viewership had been high for each show and that had Peyton smiling. Of course, she wanted her standard format to sustain the program, and she firmly believed it would. At the moment, viewers were simply caught up in the novelty of the crossover, of the entertaining addition of Ronnie Sharp, and that was fine. In a few weeks, their second crossover would drop, perfectly timed to send Paranormal Pursuit cruising toward the finale atop the ratings.

For now, however, she had lent that crossover finale enough consternation. Permission for Miramar still hung in the wind and the network still hung over her like a guillotine. Somehow, she had won that grace period to secure the place, and then, influenced by the debut crossover’s success, the network had miraculously extended it. But there was a drop-dead end ahead. Her confidence that Meyers would come through remained high, although now, after several weeks, she’d begun giving more thought to Ronnie’s offer about a “plan B.” And that meant heading back to the Cape.

Which, in turn, brought Peyton around to smiling as she closed her eyes in the sun.

“Whatever’s on your mind, Max, out with it.”

“Well…Has she called you lately?”

“Who?”

“Oh, please.”

“We spoke a couple of days ago.”

“In other words, you called her?”

“I did.”

“I bet she was surprised by the network’s deadline concession. What did she say about the crossover ratings?”

“We had talked about those already and couldn’t be happier.”

“Uh-huh. Just so you know, I spoke with Jamie.”

Peyton squinted at her. “What about?” When Max shrugged and didn’t turn to her, Peyton sighed heavily. “Max. Who I call, what I do on my own time is my business. You’re my agent and Jamie is my producer.”

“Correct. We’re family with a vested interest in your professional success.”

“I thought you came over here to relax on a holiday weekend. Stop hounding me. Please say you and Jamie weren’t gossiping.”

“No, we weren’t gossiping. I wanted reactions to the show’s smooth sailing.”

“Right.”

“The crossover’s ratings ran higher than expected, Peyton. The trade outlets were aflutter for days after it aired. Internet chatter spiked across all formats.”

“I know, Max, and the chatter is still out there.”

“Ed Rankin and his programming people are ecstatic, and the network is eating up every percentage point.
